Buyer Beware

Buyer Beware

Dec 5, 2018 | Posted by Julia Prescott | Budgeting & Cashflow, Life & Legacy, Risk Management |

It is December and everyone is going nuts.  If you are like me you avoid the malls (any and all kinds strip, indoor, outdoor, whatever) like crazy.  Just the parking lot is a war zone, so that means a TON of online shopping.  It is sort of like Christmas twice!  Once when it comes to the door then again under the tree!  Apparently, last year 40% of sales in December and November were on mobile phones, and I bet this year it is even !more.  Just pure observation, but it seems like there is less and less merchandise in stores, and you are forced online any way.  Also, stores like Sears, Gap, and lots of others are closing, because we would rather head to our computer.

The great thing is you are not going to get mugged in the parking lot shopping in your living room, the bad thing is there more cyber criminals than ever.  So what do you do?  Be smart.

If it looks too good to be true it likely is.  Nothing in this world is free, so check the web address.  You want an address with https not http no s no security.  It should have a little lock symbol.

Remember 99% off is not a thing.  It just isn’t. These weird deals can be found in pop up adds and emails.  Don’t click on things like that.  Also, don’t download shopper or deal apps that you aren’t sure of the source.

If you get the app from google or apple, then you should be ok, but if it is from a global app store who knows what you are getting?  You may think you are downloading an app when really you are downloading malware that could lock your phone and demand a ransom, which at the very least is a pain in your bum, you could lose all your data, you could have to sit at the apple store all day while they try to fix it, regardless just don’t do it.

Whether it is an app or a website, know where you are putting in your credit card info, once it is in there, someone has it, and you want to make sure it is a trustworthy someone.  Even better, use a card that you only use for online shopping or one you track easily.  That way you will spot fraudulent activity quickly.

Shop with companies you know and trust.  Maybe not click on every cute Facebook ad?  Some are awesome and are legit.  I am all for home businesses and I fully support the little guy, but this time of year it is soooo hard to know what is real and what is not.  Good luck out there people!  Happy Shopping!
